Distribution and seed propagation techniques of Shaniodendron subaequale in Anhui Tianma National Nature Reserve

Shaniodendron subaequale is a first-class key protected plant and an extremely rare species. Understanding the distribution of its resources and the key techniques for seedling cultivation is of great significance for protecting and breeding Shaniodendron subaequale. This study analyzed the distribution of the wild germplasm resources of the Shaniodendron subaequale in the Anhui Tianma National Nature Reserve, and summarized the key techniques for sowing and seedling cultivation. The survey revealed that there were 273 specimens of Shaniodendron subaequale in the protected area of nature reserve, with an altitude ranging from 460 to 700 m. 230 specimens of them were concentrated in Sihe Village, Tianzhang Town, at an altitude of 460 m, while others were scattered in Tiantangzhai Town and Jiuzhaifeng Forest Farm. This plant is commonly found in the mixed evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved forests in the gully areas. The wild population is scarce, and both its natural fruiting ability and seed germination capacity are poor.In response to the above distribution characteristics, key technologies for selecting an appropriate seed collection period, which is preferably from the Autumnal Equinox to the Frost Nodding; after the seeds are collected, they are dried indoors and shelled, and can be stored at room temperature until the end of December of the current year, and then undergo low-temperature moist sand stratification for germination in early January of the next year. During storage, the moisture content of the seeds should be maintained at 8% to 10%, and the sand bed should be turned over regularly and water replenished. In the later stage of germination promotion, the humidity of the river sand should be increased to 35%. After about 90 days of sand storage treatment, when the seeds gradually show white and start to germinate, they can be sown; sowing and seedling cultivation are proposed, including thorough disinfection of the seedbed soil before and after sowing, strict control of the thickness of the covering soil and grass; after the seedlings emerge, timely spraying of agents is carried out to prevent seedling diseases, and combined with weed control, water management and other maintenance work during the seedling stage, to ensure the normal growth of the seedlings. This article provides a reference for the protection and breeding of the germplasm resources of the Shaniodendron subaequale.
